Spot Plumbing Problems Before They Happen

May 17, 2023

As a homeowner, you know that detecting problems early helps your home run safe and smooth. Periodic plumbing inspections can help.

Check these seven things off your list to catch small issues before they turn into big problems:

#1

Inspect any exposed piping and valves in your house. Signs of leaks include watermarks, mold, puddling, or crusty build-up on fittings.

#2

Check inside toilets for broken, rusty, or film-covered parts. Toilets shouldn’t rock. Listen for running water or phantom flushes.

#3

Be on the lookout for cracked or buckling flooring, as this could be a sign of water pooling underneath.

#4

Inspect washing machine hoses for dripping or bulging. Replace the hoses every five years, especially if the washer is in a finished area.

#5

Check your water heater for signs of rust or sounds of gurgling or popping. Flushing it annually helps reduce sediment.

#6

Test your sinks and tubs by filling up and watching them drain. Slow or gurgling drains can be a sign of clogs or blockages.

#7

Check your shower and tub walls for flexing, especially around the handles and spouts. Flexing can be the start of water damage.
